General PSA - Michelin stars
Because this came up in a conversation I had last week.
The context was someone talking about being excited to visit a restaurant with one Michelin star in Chicago (the closest city to my city to find a starred restaurant). Someone else said "One star? So it's terrible?"
Pause, rewind.
The Michelin star system is ascending, not descending (as a five-star rating system is). You can have either zero Michelin stars (99% of of the world' restaurants), ONE star (currently about 2900 restaurants worldwide), TWO stars (about 500) or THREE stars (currently 145).
There are 6 three-star restaurants in London. Four in New York. This is the highest distinction a restaurant can achieve.
This is why you hear about chefs "earning their star," when you go from the rank and file to having a star. And once you have one, you can earn more...or you can lose it. Restaurants are re-evaluated to ensure they're maintaining their standards.
The Michelin guide does not review only fancy restaurants. Many of the starred restaurants are very high-end, but lots aren't. I ate a one-starred restaurant in San Francisco called State Bird Provisions which you'd be fine to go to in jeans and a tee. It was great. There's a food truck that has a Michelin star.
Michelin also only covers certain cities. They're continually expanding, but right now in the US they cover New York, DC, Chicago, California, central Florida (Miami/Tampa/Orlando), Colorado, Atlanta, and just recently added the five major Texas cities (Dallas/San Antonio/Austin/Houston/Fort Worth) although those results haven't been released yet. They cover a lot more in Europe and Asia (the Michelin guide is French).
And yes, it's the same company as the tire manufacturer. Early in their history they wanted people to travel more by car, and use their tires, so they started writing and printing guidebooks for travel. This evolved into restaurant ratings, and somehow along the way it became the ne plus ultra of restaurant hierarchies.
This has been your infodump post for the evening, brought to you by MadLori, Inc.

John Margolies (American, 1940-2016)
John Samuel Margolies was an architectural critic, photographer, and author who was noted for celebrating vernacular and novelty architecture in the United States, particularly those designed as roadside attractions. For almost forty years, he documented the most remarkable examples he found, publishing some of his discoveries in books and consigning the rest to an archive, which has now been purchased by the Library of Congress who, in a wonderfully gracious move, have lifted all copyright restrictions on the photographs. ORLANDO, Fla. (WFLA) — A University of Central Florida student was arrested after he allegedly made threats to shoot three Jewish students during a school event last week.
According to documents, Palestinian-American student Seif Asi, 21, approached a table of Jewish students and got into a one to two-minute “heated conversation” during a UCF Office of Student Involvement approved pro-Israel free expression event on Jan. 23.
The University of Central Florida Police Department said once Asi walked away, one of the students ran to a marked patrol car and was “visibly scared.” The student told UCFPD that Asi had threatened to shoot them with a gun.
When UCFPD stopped Asi, he told them that he was Palestinian and had family in Palestine, adding that he was tired of seeing Jewish supporters on campus and complained about a pro-Israel match that occurred last week.
The arrest report shows that Asi told police he saw the same group of students at the march, and it made him upset when he saw them setting up their table on Tuesday. He also told police that he’s “tired of seeing students on campus defend the killing of Palestinian people.”
The 21-year-old said he was on his way back from working out when his “emotions got the better of him.” Police said he apologized for his behavior and asked if he could apologize to the students, acknowledging that he shouldn’t have made the threat.
According to documents, Asi denied owning a firearm, and no weapon was found on his person.
The three victims, who are part of a group called “Students Supporting Israel” or SSI, provided sworn verbal and written statements consistent with each other. The students said Asi accused them of supporting the death of his family members back home. Then, all three students allegedly heard Asi say, “You won’t be here anymore when I come back and shoot you.”
Asi was arrested and charged with three counts of intimidation and credible threat to a person wearing a religious item, according to officials.
Following Asi’s arrest, UCF released a statement saying that while Asi apologized, he would still have to answer for violating university policy and state and federal laws.
“While the student acknowledged his emotions got the better of him and apologized for his words, he will still have to answer for the violations of university policy and state and federal laws,” the statement read in part.

Tijuana sunrise | kinktober 2024 | day iv.: “cardamom kisses”
pairing: chuck billy x chuck schuldiner
prompt: aphrodisiacs
word count: 4364
song: “rain” by guano apes
It wasn’t often I would wake up wondering why an axe had lodged itself into the wall next to my window. I rolled over onto my back and looked out the windowpane to the first rays of early morning sunlight to find an axe handle sticking out from the outside wall as if someone had come after me in the middle of the night. I lifted myself up out of the bed for a glimpse out the window, only to find no one out there.
And yet, I needed to know who had come after me with an axe. It was difficult to see all the way out the window from the screen being right in my face; at the same time, however, I had a sneaking suspicion as to whom would do this to me, and to my house as well.
Quickly, I got dressed and bowed outside of the house for a better examination of the handle itself. Easier said than done, of course, and it didn’t help that the wind was beginning to pick up all around me. A few stray curls dangled down over my face and lips all the while, but I needed to take this thing out of the wall. I gripped onto the handle with both hands and tugged with all my might; something told me that I had to start working out more, especially if I was to go on tour again soon enough: I got too tired too easily on the last round.
I could feel my muscles twitching as I dislodged the axe from the wall next to my window: the edge of the axehead itself was still sharp, and as red as a tomato. I twirled the axe handle around for a better look at the back of the head itself.
“Who in the world,” I muttered aloud. Indeed, the handle itself still had the sticker on the base, and thus, I decided to do some sleuthing.
I needed a walk, anyway.
With my sunglasses on and a quick comb of my hair with my fingers, I took the axe slung over my shoulder as if I was off to work in the forest. It was a cool morning, cooler than usual for the middle of September in central Florida, especially when a hurricane was on the horizon, so I definitely felt like a lumberjack walking along the street there: albeit a lumberjack without his flannel.
I strode around the next corner, which was going to take me into town, and I knew that I could ask someone as to who had bought an axe in recent days.
I passed by the house surrounded by a series of trees, which in turn kept it cool from the harsh humid summers. It was one of those houses that had visitors over during the wintertime, and whoever came about in the summer was anyone’s guess: it was like the owners had a whole entire army of caretakers on hand during the summertime and hurricane season. At the end of the shaded, long driveway, the garage door stood wide open so I could see the vast, empty garage, with a big black Harley parked in the dead center.
I stood right at the very end of the driveway right before the open garage door, and I spotted Chuck, Chuck from Testament, straddled upon his work bench right next to his big black motorcycle with what appeared to be a joint. He kept his gaze fixated on me as I stood still at the mouth of the driveway. Even from a distance, I could feel the way his gaze locked onto me and stared straight through me. Those thick, molasses-colored wavy locks seemed to drift around the crown of his head and against the crests of his shoulders.
I couldn’t explain it but I could feel it.
I started walking close to him, and I noticed him nodding at me all the while.
“I see you heard me,” he said to me in that smooth, velvety voice once I came within earshot. I spun the axe handle about in the palm of my hand so the sharp edge of the head stayed pointed to the ground, and then I walked on at a quicker pace towards him. He kept on nodding at me as I came on closer to him. “You definitely heard me.”
I nibbled on my bottom lip as I stopped right before him. I was confused and somewhat miffed that he had thrown an axe at my house and I was lucky that he hadn’t broken my window. All the while, he showed me a little smirk and lit up the blunt again, and I was met with the unmistakable smell of pot burning. But I wasn’t going to let that get in my way, however.
“Okay, I have… just one question,” I began, and I struggled to keep my composure.
“Go ahead,” he coaxed me, and what got me most was his sense of calm in junction with the cloud of smoke around him. I felt as though I was flirting with disaster being there with him and that smoky joint.
“Why was there an axe sticking out of my wall?”
“To get your attention,” he replied with a straight face and without a second wasted.
“Why not just call?” I demanded. “I’m home, you know. You could have just rang me up and said something like… you wanted to meet me or whatever. You could have woken me up that way.”
“But I really, truly wanted to get your attention, though,” he insisted. “A simple phone call would have been boring. And knowing how you slept through the wake up call the last time Death went on tour with us, I wasn’t going to risk it. So I wanted to make it interesting.”
“So you throw an axe at my house?” I demanded, and I wanted to laugh but I was simultaneously horrified.
“I didn’t break the window, now, did I?” he asked me, slightly taken aback by that.
“No, you missed. But you sure got close to the glass, though. You certainly did risk it there.”
I glanced down at the axe cradled in my hands, and I sighed through my nose.
“Okay. Now, what is it that you want exactly?” I set the axe down before him, head down on the ground before his feet. Chuck took out the joint from his lips and snubbed the end of it on the surface of the concrete right there next to his left foot. He lifted his gaze to me right as a thick curtain of smoke billowed out from his lips: those steely eyes staring back at me from that sun-kissed brown skin.
“I wanna get together with you,” he told me.
“Get together? Get together and do what?”
“Have drinks, what else? We’re touring again in about a month so it just makes sense to me that you and I get to know each other on a closer level.”
“But I don’t really drink, though,” I pointed out.
“That’s alright,” he assured me with a shake of his head. “We’ll go someplace nice, someplace where we can relax and have some fun together without a little alky involved.” He flashed me a wink and a sly little smile, and I sighed through my nose once again. The smell of the pot was enough to make me wish for something crunchy and salty.
“You got anything to eat?” I asked him.
“As a matter of fact, I do,” he replied as he ran his fingers through his dark hair. “Let me make you some breakfast. That is, if you haven’t eaten yet.”
“I haven’t, no,” I assured him, and he led me into the house.
Chuck spoiled me with some fresh Canadian bacon with scrambled eggs and sourdough toast with garlicky butter: a cool morning warranted something hearty for the two of us, especially if we were going to go out for drinks in a little while after that. Though I wasn’t sure as to what bar or club around the neighborhood opened earlier in the day given the other ones I knew of never opened shop until around dinner time.
After breakfast, it was closing in on noon, and though it was still cool out, I could feel the hurricane closing in on the coast before us: the cloud bands spread over the sky overhead and the cool breeze swept over us like a blanket. Nevertheless, Chuck handed me his second motorcycle helmet, the red one with a shiny crown that seemed to glitter under the garage lights. He tied up his hair into a snug bun at the back of his head before he put on his solid black helmet with a brown and white eagle feather inscribed on one side; he then put on his black leather jacket with a tag reading “Chief” over his heart, and his accompanying leather gloves to hide his rings, and he led me to his bike.
“I spent all summer fixing this baby,” he told me, and I noticed the word “Sting” inscribed on the side of the fuel tank in dark gray lettering. He took out the key to the bike from his jacket pocket, and he coaxed me onto the backseat of the bike, which he had named Sting.
He climbed aboard first, and then I sank down right behind him with my knees tucked right behind his own. Before he stuck the key into the slot, I noticed that he had put the axe up onto the wall to the left of me.
Chuck started up Sting, which roared to life there in the garage to the point that any other noises were drowned out. I instinctively put my arms around his waist, and he kicked it into gear.
We rolled forth onto the street, and we sped along the block. Everything moved along at such a quick clip that I could have sworn we were going to get pulled over before we even left town.
But we never did get pulled over. Instead, he took me to the freeway, and I figured right away we were going to Orlando. No way I could ask him at that point, but I knew I would once we got there.
I leaned in closer to his back as we sped along the freeway, past the cars and the trucks and under the warmth of the high noon sun. I looked out to the left at the cloud bands spreading in over the horizon, and I suddenly understood why: something about a storm brewing made me curious, and it made me want to come in closer to him as well. But I was going to ask him about it regardless, however.
We took the second exit off into the heart of town, and a gust of wind hit us hard from the side.
He didn’t miss a beat, however, as he took me to this brightly lit bar on the right side of the main artery from the freeway, nestled right in between a Christian store and an adult bookstore, which was always the least shocking thing in the heart of downtown Orlando. He parked at the curb out front, and he switched off the bike.
We took off our helmets in unison, and I shook my hair about to let those stray curls loose over my shoulders. Meanwhile, he kept his bun in place at the back of his head.
“May I ask why we’re in Orlando,” I started to him as I climbed off the backseat; I never realized how much the vibrating of the engine affected me until I stood up off the backseat: the entire inside of my thighs were tingling and I swore my pants had tightened up within a few minutes.
“Right here!”
Chuck gestured to the front glass door of the bar, which beheld the word “Cardamom” in swirled bright red cursive lettering.
“Oh, this is that new place that also serves lunch,” I recalled.
“I came here about a week ago with Alex and Eric and the three of us got so hammered,” he said with a chuckle. “And it wasn’t even four o’clock yet, either.”
That gave me a bit of a pit in my stomach because something told me we were about to get serious in there.
He held the door open for me, and we were greeted by a rush of cold air conditioned air. The entire floor was covered in thick, heavy dark stone that sparkled under the golden ceiling lights; I noticed the wrought iron cages that surrounded the barren light bulbs suspended down from the ceiling. The bar itself was this dark stone that sparkled as if someone had spilled some glitter inside while the stools were all these spindly wrought iron skeletons with bright red cushions: it took me a second to realize that the stools matched the lights. I spotted a lush red couch tucked in the far corner of the room, and I wondered if we were going to go over there at all.
Indeed, the entire front part of the bar smelled of cardamom, the anise and sugarcane feeling that followed me around all the way to Christmas.
Chuck led me to the table near the couch, right behind two women with knee high boots and matching white shirts, and no sooner had we sat down and placed our helmets on the floor underneath our feet when the waitress in the blood red satin top with the top two buttons undone ambled on up to us.
“I’ll have an Irish coffee,” he told her, to which she echoed him with a wag of her finger,
“Irish coffee, I haven’t met anyone who enjoys an Irish coffee since I was like sixteen,” I confessed to him, and I brought my attention to her. “Um… I’ll have a Bloody Mary, no salt on the rim.”
“Bloody Mary! I thought you didn’t drink.”
“No, I said I don’t really drink, meaning I don’t do it often,” I corrected him, to which he raised an eyebrow at me.
“Irish coffee and Bloody Mary, I’ll be back in two shakes of a lamb’s tail,” she promised us in a velvety voice. Chuck and I then leaned in closer to each other, and I couldn’t help but feel as though she was judging us for being together. In fact, I noticed that we were the only men in there: there were the two girls at the bar, as well as a few who came in behind us, and the bartenders themselves were all women.
And he and I had both ordered cocktails.
“You know, coffee and spicy food are said to be aphrodisiacs,” he informed me in a low voice.
“I think aphrodisiacs are said to be an old wives’ tale,” I said, and I couldn’t help but show him a smile.
“They aren’t,” he insisted. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve eaten say, chocolate, or drank down a good cup of coffee and I felt a need to jerk off.”
I chuckled at that.
“What? It’s true! It’s like it wakes you up without a second thought. Put booze into the mix and you have got a good time and a half waiting to happen.”
The waitress returned to us about as quickly as she had left with our drinks in hand and a pair of napkins in her front pocket. It was lunchtime, and Chuck and I were both already drinking.
Maybe I really did need this to loosen myself up.
I was often accused of being a perfectionist, after all.
We both thanked her, and he told her that we needed more time before we decided on what to have to eat, especially since I wasn’t really hungry right then.
But I gazed on at the drink before me, the tall glass filled with that bright red opaque tomato juice concoction, a lime wedge on one side of the glass, and a stick of bright green celery which jutted out before me. I looked on at Chuck’s Irish coffee, rich and dark with a slight swirl inside topped with the cream and some chocolate shavings all inside of the big heavy glass with the thick handle. A part of me wished I had asked for that instead; but I brought the straw to my lips for a careful sip, and the spices, the pepper, and the horseradish all knocked me right between the eyes.
I let out a low whistle and shook my head about.
“Phew.”
“Spicy?” he asked me.
“Quite. It’s delicious, though.” I dunked the stick of celery into the mixture, and then I took it out for a bite. Chuck meanwhile sipped on his Irish coffee, to which he nodded his head.
“That’s fantastic,” he breathed. “Not too sharp, not too sweet, either.”
He offered me a sip, and I took the chance. Indeed, the coffee and the whiskey danced on my tongue and made me feel my chest more. We sipped on our drinks some more before I thought about having a hot dog or something. But then something came over me, especially when I noticed the girls had left the bar, and the waitress and the bartenders had gone into the back part of the bar, which in turn left Chuck and I completely alone. Indeed, I noticed the sun had disappeared behind a bank of clouds.
But then again, I had my eye on the Bloody Mary, on the pepper, the horseradish, the way that the hot sauce hit me over the head and made my heart pound.
Something else was coming over me, as well.
“Man…” I muttered.
“What?” he asked me.
“I don’t know if it’s the Tabasco sauce or the pepper, but…” I peered behind me to the rest of the bar, only to find that we were in fact alone. I spotted the doorway right behind me, and I could make out the stairs inside, and I wondered where they were going. I returned to him as a feeling of warmth washed over me. “I have an idea.”
I picked up the glass and stood to my feet. I gestured for him to follow me up those steps back there. The winds were beginning to pick up outside of the bar, and I hoped that we could go back home in one piece, and that Sting was still out there as well. But for the time being, he was the only thing I could focus on.
I led him up the creaking stairs, only to find the small room at the very top. We were met with a small chaise lounge covered in plush crushed red velvet accompanied with a small rickety footstool and a pile of pillows. I wondered what the girls who worked in the bar were doing with all of this in there, but then Chuck downed the rest of his Irish coffee and set the glass down on the floor by the top of the stairs.
The wind picked up outside, but that second level of the bar seemed to be holding up even in the face of it all.
We could be safe in there with our drinks and our thoughts.
I sipped on my Bloody Mary again when his long, thick fingers grazed over the small of my back. I nearly fell face first onto the chaise, but I landed on the floor, on my hip, and I steadied myself on the edge of the seat with my free hand. I gazed up at him right as he lingered over me, and his long hair swept over my face. He cupped my face, and those long fingers and palms felt as soft and smooth as silk. His big turquoise and metal rings were just the right amount of cool on my warm skin.
“Finish that Bloody Mary, and I’ll show you blood,” he whispered to me. I could smell the coffee on his breath, while I had the taste of pepper and heat on me.
It wasn’t an old wives’ tale, after all, as I downed the rest of the Bloody Mary. Before I could set the glass down on the floor underneath the chaise, he pressed his lips to my own. The heat surged through me as the rain began to fall against the wall right behind us.
I lay down flat on my back, and I could feel my hair spread out around my head. We could lay on the chaise, but I was already on the floor. Chuck hung over me with his hands pressed down on either side of my shoulders, and he looked as though he was about to grind against me. But he never did.
Instead, he unzipped his jacket and showed off his chest to me.
“Feel me,” he begged to me in a breathy voice.
“Under… the shirt?”
“Please.”
I reached under his shirt, and I ran my tongue across the back of my teeth. The taste of pepper again. Pepper and chili.
I raked my fingers down his chest, all the way down to his waist; the smell of the leather from his jacket lingered over me. The taste, the smell, the feel… I was dancing. I was dancing and I was ready to undo his pants for him.
And I did. I opened his pants for him, and he rested his knees down on the floor, on either side of my legs.
I kept on stroking him under his shirt, and then he gave his long hair a toss back with the flick of his head.
“Okay, Chuck, let me show you something,” he began again with a slight clearing of his throat, and he pointed to the head of the chaise, right behind my head. “Hand me that pillow.”
Indeed, I reached up and picked the pillow off the cushion for him. I ran my tongue on the back of my teeth again, and I tasted spices again.
He took the pillow and tucked it between his thighs. I watched him. I watched him rub that pillow against his bare, exposed dick. The mere sight of that combined with the taste left over in my mouth and the smell of the coffee and the leather. It was all driving me wild. I could feel my pants tightening.
A dance of aphrodisiacs in a place named for an aphrodisiac.
I was breathing harder, and I didn’t realize it.
I reached up to the edge of the chaise as if to get more comfortable, but he gripped onto my hip with his free hand.
“And just where do you think you’re going?” he demanded.
I had no idea if he was still rubbing the pillow against his dick, but I could feel my pants coming off. My pants followed by my underwear.
He held onto my hips with both hands while I held onto the edge of the chaise with both hands. I buried my face into the velvet cushion part of the chaise so I was engulfed with the smell of the pepper, the chili, and also the horseradish.
He thrust hard into my ass. It felt like he was branding me with that thick hard dick stimulated by the velvet and the Irish coffee.
The Irish coffee.
It was all too much. It was all too much and I was going to explode all too quickly. But it didn’t matter. He thrust hard, as if he was throwing an axe at my window. I lifted my head and made a low growl, one that sounded like one of the growls I made on Scream Bloody Gore. At that point, the rain came down in droves on the wall behind us so I could growl as loud as I could without any of the girls downstairs hearing us.
Chuck moved his dick out from my prostate and my ass, and he leaned against my back. The two of us breathed hard in unison; I could feel his heart pounding in his chest, while a bead of sweat dripped down from my temple to the side of my face.
“I needed that so much,” I confessed to him in a broken voice.
“Get you out of whatever funk has been around your head,” he whispered into my ear.
The rain pounded hard against the wall, and I wondered if we had any time to get back to the house. Chuck then read my mind and lifted off me. I turned back around to see him fixing his pants and putting his jacket back on.
“You’re not gonna clean yourself off?” I asked him with another clearing of my throat.
“There’s a hurricane coming and I have to do laundry, anyway,” he told me, to which I shrugged at that. He took me by the hand, and we picked up our glasses and doubled back downstairs. I hated the idea of leaving dirty dishes behind when a storm was coming but we had no time. I could not stop thinking about that encounter as we picked up the helmets and headed for the door.
“I’m always going to want kisses here,” he confessed as we stepped out to the torrential rain.
“You and me both,” I said over the roar of the weather around us. He flashed me a wink as he took his key out of his coat pocket.
We climbed aboard Sting, and he fired it up in one fell swoop. I put my arms around his waist again, but that time I slipped my hands down to below his waistband. Though we had had our encounter, I could still feel the effects of our cocktails and the kiss of cardamom around us. That big motorcycle engine and the high winds were both loud enough for me to laugh like a madman all the way back to the house in Altamonte Springs.
And at least we had an axe on hand in the instance of us getting stuck inside of the house. One hell of an axe, as well.

The last of my NJ headcanons. Now let it be known that there will probably be more in the future, considering he is my favorite, HOWEVER this is all I have for now lol.
New Jersey-
Normally is presenting more as Central Jersey, his tics are from North and South trying to speak at the same time
Because of slightly demonic magic, Jersey is fractured like how his state is, there’s North, South, and Central, they can all split into their own persons with North looking the same, but not for too long
While Jersey has used many names during his life, the one his mothers gave him is the only few actually know, Jonah Eriksson Bakker, Eriksson being his Mother’s last name and Bakker his Ma’s
Despite it being hundreds of years, he still isn’t used to English, words never come out quite right, there’s almost always something just slightly missed pronounced even when taking his accent into account
If he’s upset or tired he has a pretty heavy lisp, which along with his already heavy accent when feeling any emotion makes him pretty impossible to understand, the only ones that do are York, Del, and surprisingly Penn
Likes to call New York ‘Yorkie’ Vermont ‘Monty’ Kentucky ‘Ken’ (he’s the only one allowed too) California ‘Westie’ Florida ‘Dia’ ‘Sunshine’ or ‘Flo Rida’ and says Texas like how a Russian would (he has no idea why he started to he just did one day)
The Jersey Devil is real, Jerseys met it multiple times in his life, sometimes they exist in the same space in the Pine Barrens, but most times they don’t
Jersey has a Jersey Devil plush, had it since he was a young child, it’s his prized possession along with one of Connie’s books from the 1850s that he ‘borrowed’
When he was younger, Jersey would go to Devil’s Tree to read, it's how he learn the hard way, that his not father father is not the only demon that resides in NJ
In contrast to York, Jersey LOVES drop towers, thinks that they are the second best theme park flat ride to ever exist (the first are those super scramblers that flip while spinning)
Threw his shoe at York so much that Penn ended up buying him sandals as a joke, a joke that Jersey didn’t understand until YEARS later, he still loves and uses those sandals, his aim is unmatched when it comes to hitting York
Would get hit by Yorkie every time he said the R word (which he still doesn't fully believe is a slur but whatever Yorkie), this was specifically during the 2000s
Has brought every State to Action Park at least once when it was still open, it’s best not to question how he convinced Alaska and Hawaii or literally any other State, it’s just best not too
Jersey has a little devil that could in theory be related to the Jersey Devil, it's name is Impy
#welcome to the table#welcome to the statehouse#wttt#wttt new jersey#wttsh new jersey#wttt headcanons#the last one i actually added on here and then added to google doc#listen okay#i wanted him to have a lil devil#but like obvi theres JD#but he and JD have a rocky relationship#so theres no way that would work#and since his father is literally the devil from the bible#i thought “hey why not give him a lil demon”#so here we are#also is it clear enough how much i love Jersey#like its a lot lolz#but of course i have too#i live here#its in my contract

God, I’m so tired of living in central-ass backwoods Florida, y’all. I’m rotting here, not because of the sun or the humidity, but the hostility and hate I see around me at all times. The boldness of it, the absolute boldness of people’s racism, sexism, and anti-queer horseshit here is only growing louder and nastier with Desantis in office. It’s withering my soul to see the people I was raised around becoming so hostile, so foul, voting in honest to god book burning Nazis and supporting shitty Christian ideology in local government on a level that’s becoming completely unavoidable. It ain’t just that, I don’t have anyone outside my home that wants to even acknowledge what’s happening. All my friends are straight, and all they care about is their jobs and whatever fucking video games they’re playing. I can’t take that shit anymore, I can’t take people turning a blind eye to absolute malice, but at the same time I feel like if I leave then they win, right? Like, me being here, me talking about these things with people, that does normalize things on some level for a small bunch of people. If I don’t, then it feels like there’s nothing left but the hate.
Shit’s hard. With Pride month rolling in, my emotions are roiling. I feel stupid and alone, and damn it that’s not what I want to feel during Pride. I want to feel proud, but all I feel is anger.

Last week's Friday 0530 UTC Shortwave Radiogram broadcast was the previous week's program. After a frenetic Wednesday and Thursday producing the show, sometimes I forget to upload the programs. Acknowledging that my brain will no longer necessarily remind me, this task is now in my computer's calendar, with an audible reminder. The impact of that error was limited by the fact that the Friday 0530 UTC show does not seem to have much of an audience. This could be due to the inconvenient hour in the Americas (e.g., I'm usually asleep). Audio, the transmission on 7780 kHz from WRMI is beamed to the southwest, into Central America, where there is not a large shortwave/amateur radio community, and to New Zealand and Australia. The signal is reaching across the Pacific, at least this time of the year. So if you are in that part of the world (or can access an SDR there), please tune in and decode. After a nasty few days of very hot temperatures, this week we have been enjoying wonderful weather, with temperatures in the 70s F (~24C) and low humidity. This weekend Tropical Cyclone Sixteen comes to the US east coast, with substantial rains, wind gusts, and maybe even some power disruptions. A good weekend to be inside, tuning the radio, possibly on emergency power. A video of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 323) is provided by Scott in Ontario (Friday 1300 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis is provided by Roger in Germany. Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 323, 21-25 September 2023, in MFSK modes as noted: 1:43 MFSK32: Program preview 2:51 MFSK32: Airless bicycle tires near production* 8:35 MFSK64: Louis Armstrong's 1965 visit to the GDR* 15:26 MFSK64: This week's images* 28:26 MFSK32: Closing announcements Please send reception reports to [email protected] And visit http://swradiogram.net Twitter: @SWRadiogram or https://twitter.com/swradiogram (visit during the weekend to see listeners’ results) Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/567099476753304 Shortwave Radiogram Gateway Wiki: https://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/Shortwave_Radiogram_Gateway

If there is one day a year I am almost guaranteed to not get out of bed, or to have a rough emotional time, it's Easter.
I'm not Christian, neither are my kids, we treated it similarly to how pagans and atheists do. We celebrated bunnies and eggs, baby animals, and of course cute things. There wasn't much talk of all this Jesus stuff.
And each Easter was spent doing egg hunts in my in laws back yard with the kids.
I loved that yard. It was a grounding place for me, and moreso when all of my kids were with me.
We would spend time outside for the first time after a long winter.
When you have 3 sons, having them cooped up inside all winter is rough for them, and as a result even WORSE for you, much of the time. Every mom knows fresh air and Sunshine tire a kid out and allow them to get the sleep they are so desperately behind on.
Spring is a reset button, and the Easter Holiday marked spring when I was a non practicing pagan.
So, after my children were taken, Easter was the worst.
This year is different. My step kids mother ran off to Florida to live, leaving her three scared and confused kids up here. All three are either adults, or almost adults, but that kind of thing has a toll.
All the kids wanted was to make things the same as they always have been. When she abandoned her kids, I decided I had to make sure our house was the central point. I had to make sure our house was stable and felt "normal"
Two months ago, I started making sure we had dinner every night at the table. I started having "pasta Saturday" where we home make pasta noodles and I get inventive with sauces.
Most of the kids aren't around for that, as 2 of the 3 live either on their own or with their grandfather. But for the one that is around, those touchstones will be things she'll bring forward through her life.
And the other kids know they are always welcome to join us.
That took the dread away this year.
The grief is still present, and I acknowledge it, but I have a big ol dinner to make and 3 kids who really need a slice of normal Easter shenanigans.
So off I go.

Why Water Filtration is a Must for Florida Homes and Businesses
Water is essential to life, yet many Florida residents face challenges when it comes to the quality of their water. Whether you're dealing with hard water, contaminants, or other water quality issues, finding the right solution is key. This is where Central Florida Water Treatment steps in, offering professional water filtration services that can transform the water you use every day.
Why Water Filtration Matters in Florida
Florida's water supply is often plagued by problems such as high mineral content, contaminants, and sediment. Hard water, in particular, is a common issue across the state. Not only does hard water cause limescale build-up in appliances and plumbing, but it can also leave your skin and hair feeling dry.
Contaminants like chlorine, lead, and bacteria can also find their way into the water supply, posing potential health risks. Whether your water comes from the city or a private well, water filtration can drastically improve its quality, making it safer and more enjoyable to use.
The Benefits of Water Filtration
Healthier Drinking Water: With water filtration systems like reverse osmosis, harmful contaminants are effectively removed, providing you with pure, clean drinking water.
Softer Water for Your Skin and Hair: Hard water can leave your skin dry and your hair feeling brittle. Water softeners make a noticeable difference, leaving your skin and hair softer and healthier.
Protect Your Appliances: Mineral build-up from hard water can reduce the efficiency and lifespan of appliances like dishwashers, washing machines, and water heaters. A water softener can prevent this build-up, helping your appliances last longer.
Better Taste and Smell: Water filtration systems can remove the chlorine and other chemicals that give your tap water an unpleasant taste or odor, making your water more enjoyable.
Environmental Benefits: By using a home filtration system, you can reduce the need for bottled water, cutting down on plastic waste and helping the environment.
Central Florida Water Treatment Services
At Central Florida Water Treatment, they offer a variety of services tailored to meet the needs of homes and businesses in the area. Their water filtration solutions include:
Whole House Filtration: Ensure that all the water in your home, from the shower to the kitchen sink, is clean and safe. These systems filter out contaminants throughout your entire plumbing system.
Reverse Osmosis Systems: For those looking for the purest drinking water, reverse osmosis systems effectively remove contaminants like lead, fluoride, and chlorine.
Water Softeners: If you're tired of dealing with hard water, a water softener can make all the difference. It removes minerals like calcium and magnesium, protecting your plumbing and appliances while improving the feel of your water.
Well Water Filtration: For homes and businesses using well water, specialized filtration systems can remove sediment, bacteria, and other impurities unique to well water sources.

How Arizona’s Abortion Ballot Measure Could Affect the Presidential Race
New Post has been published on https://sa7ab.info/2024/08/16/how-arizonas-abortion-ballot-measure-could-affect-the-presidential-race/
How Arizona’s Abortion Ballot Measure Could Affect the Presidential Race
Arizona voters will decide in November whether to enshrine the right to abortion in the state constitution—a move in a key swing state that could have implications for the tumultuous and historic presidential election.
The Arizona secretary of state’s office confirmed to TIME that the measure will appear on the ballot in the November election after it had certified on Monday about 577,971 signatures—far surpassing the number needed to put the initiative on the ballot. Dawn Penich, communications director for the coalition supporting the initiative, Arizona for Abortion Access, says the group turned in the highest number of signatures by a citizens initiative in state history: more than 820,000.
The coalition, which includes reproductive rights organizations like the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona, celebrated the news. “Us moving forward with our ballot initiative and getting as much support as we’ve already gotten shows that Arizonans are tired of seeing their rights subject to the political whims of whoever might be in the legislature or whoever we may be in our courts, and they want to settle this matter once and for all for themselves through this citizens initiative process,” says Chris Love, spokesperson for the coalition’s campaign.
Arizona currently prohibits abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The law, which was signed in 2022, includes exceptions for medical emergencies. The November ballot measure, Proposition 139, would allow abortions until a fetus could survive outside the womb, which is typically around the 24th week of pregnancy. It would also include exceptions after that if the pregnant person’s life is at risk or to protect the individual’s physical or mental health. It would “establish a fundamental right to abortion” in the state constitution and would prevent the state from banning or restricting access to the procedure before viability. States including Michigan and Ohio have previously approved similar measures.
Those who oppose the measure have said it goes too far, arguing that the mental health exception is broad and would allow people to end viable pregnancies.
Having the abortion initiative on the ballot in November could have political effects beyond reproductive rights in Arizona. In the presidential campaign, it’s a key difference between Vice President Kamala Harris, who was central to the Biden Administration’s messaging on reproductive rights, and former President Donald Trump, who appointed three of the Supreme Court Justices who voted to overturn Roe v. Wade. Other Democrats have made it a main focus of their 2024 campaigns, and states including Colorado, Florida, Maryland, Nevada, and South Dakota are all set to vote on abortion rights this year.
The issue’s interplay with political races and how it affects turnout could be particularly determinative in Arizona, one of the most crucial battleground states in the 2024 election.
“Arizona is a swing state; our electoral outcomes typically are razor, razor thin,” says Samara Klar, a political science professor at the University of Arizona. “We are seeing tiny margins of victory in very high-profile elections, and frankly, in local elections as well. So having something on the ballot that is going to mobilize voters to come out is really, really crucial.”
In other abortion ballot initiatives that have come before voters since the U.S. Supreme Court gutted the constitutional right to abortion in 2022, Americans have largely sided with abortion rights and the issue has typically boosted Democrats. “Having abortion on the ballot is helpful for Democrats because it mobilizes the types of people that are going to support Democratic candidates,” Klar says.
Some polls show support for abortion rights among Arizonans. In March, Klar collaborated with YouGov on a survey of 800 registered Arizona voters. More than 40% said abortion decisions should be left up to a woman and her doctor, while about 25% supported a near-total abortion ban. A CBS News poll in May found that 65% of likely Arizona voters said they would vote “yes” on a ballot measure establishing a constitutional right to abortion in the state; 21% said they would vote against it.
Abortion policy in Arizona has been somewhat unsettled since the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization two years ago. In April, the Arizona Supreme Court upheld an 1864 law that only allowed abortions to save the pregnant person’s life, with no exceptions for rape or incest. The Republican-controlled legislature then repealed the law, leaving a 2022 statute banning abortions after 15 weeks in place.
“There’s been a lot of confusion about what the status of the law in Arizona has been,” Love says. “Ensuring this right in the constitution gives Arizona voters the certainty that they’ll need to understand what their reproductive rights are and, again, take those matters back into their own hands and make those personal health care decisions with their families and their medical providers.”
And as Arizona voters head to the ballot box, the abortion initiative “absolutely could make a difference” in the presidential race, Klar says. “This is a tight state, a salient issue, and a very mobilizing issue.”
